MUMBAI: Indian stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is under police investigation after a performance that insulted a prominent politician and Prime Minister Narendra Modi ally, raising questions about the boundaries of free expression in the biggest democracy in the world.
The violence that followed sparked discussion on social media and prime-time television, despite Kamra’s refusal to issue an apology for allegedly using the word “traitor” in reference to Eknath Shinde, the deputy chief minister of the wealthiest state in India.
“I don’t fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down,” Kamra, a well-known Modi critic with over 6 million social media followers, made clear in a statement on Monday.
