In support of his steadfast claim to the Arctic island, President Donald Trump has stated that he believes the US will take control of Greenland, at one point citing “economic security” as justification. Although the self-governing Danish territory has quickly said that it is not for sale, there is a high interest for its extensive and largely unexplored mineral potential.
As the speedboat makes its way through rough seas and striking fjords at the southernmost point of Greenland, jagged grey peaks abruptly come into view.
“Those very high pointy mountains, it’s basically a gold belt,” says Eldur Olafsson, CEO of Amaroq Minerals, a mining business.
We landed at a secluded valley beneath Nalunaq Mountain, where the company is drilling for gold, after two hours of sailing.
