ISLAMABAD: Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan of the Supreme Court has noted that international norms do not prohibit the court martial of civilians.
He made these comments at the hearing of an intra-court appeal against civilians being tried in military courts.
Senior attorney Salman Akram Raja argued on behalf of the convicted defendant, Arzam Junaid, in the intra-court appeal against the military trials of civilians before a seven-member constitutional panel presided over by Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan.
The constitutional bench of the highest court last year gave military courts provisional authorization to render decisions in cases involving 85 suspects who are allegedly connected to the May 9, 2023, riots.
