Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Reuters that Iran is “dramatically” increasing the amount of uranium enriched to up to 60% purity that it can produce, which is over 90% of weapons grade.
Western capitals, which already contend that there is no civilian rationale for Iran’s enrichment to that extent because no other nation has done so without developing nuclear weapons—something Iran denies pursuing—will undoubtedly be considerably more alarmed by the move.
According to an IAEA yardstick, Iran already possesses enough material enriched to up to 60%, its most highly enriched stock, for four nuclear bombs in theory if it continues to enrich it. At lower enrichment levels, it has enough for more.
