The agency, which is a division of the Treasury Department, is being slashed during the US tax season, when businesses and millions of Americans rely on it to file their taxes.
An office known as the Small Business/Self-Employed (SBSE) Division will be affected by half of the layoffs.
The SBSE heads’ signed email, which I was able to get, stated that the laid-off workers “were not deemed as critical to filing season.”
The Treasury Department and IRS have been contacted by the news for comment.
Commissioner Lia Colbert and Deputy Commissioner Maha Williams stated in the SBSE email that “over 3,500 SB/SE probationary hires will be terminated by the end of this week, even though details are still developing.”
