In the midst of a worsening water shortage, Islamabad and Rawalpindi finally experienced substantial rains on Wednesday night after almost four months.
Groundwater levels had been dropping due to the extended dry period, and earlier this week the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared an emergency in the twin towns.
At 19 mm in Bokra, 22 mm in H-8, 20 mm in Shamsabad, and 18 mm in Chaklala, rainfall was recorded, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The weather was greatly improved by the rain, which started sporadically in Islamabad and lasted all night until dawn. There is hope for short-term respite from the ongoing drought as the Met Office forecasts more rainfall in the capital and Pindi over the next three days.
