When Chen last saw her, a Hamas terrorist had shot Yam in the face, leaving her convulsing on their living room floor; moments before, Nadav, Chen’s spouse, had also been shot in the chest, killing him. They were escorted out of the secure room at gunpoint, forcing them to step over his body. There was not time for farewells.
“To safeguard his family, he [Nadav] took this wooden board and stood at the door of the safe room. Chen remembers, “And then they broke into the safe room.”
“Is it possible that he struck them with this wooden plank? When I turned around, I saw four or five of them screaming inside the safe room before they shot Nadav twice or three times in the chest at close range. With his arms raised, it was how he was lying. He remained silent. I reasoned that he might be acting.
She reported that everything was “quiet, kind of idyllic” outside and that they expected Israeli forces to arrive any moment. It did not occur.
The Hamas militants first attempted to ignite the family’s hybrid automobile but were unable. Afterward, they loaded Chen and her three surviving children into another car and fled the kibbutz Kfar Aza.
