Just days after Republican Donald Trump was elected to a second term in the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Yechiel Leiter as Israel’s new ambassador to the United States.
A longtime supporter of illegal settlement construction, Leiter is a US-born resident of an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank. His appointment follows the Netanyahu administration’s jubilant reaction to Trump’s reelection.
Trump asserted that “the Jewish state has never had a better friend in the White House” throughout his first term, demonstrating his unwavering loyalty to Israel, especially with regard to Israeli settlements.
Leiter previously worked for Netanyahu in the Israeli government as his chief of staff when the prime minister was the finance minister, according to a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office on Friday.
