Residents and visitors alike have hailed a rare downpour that has revitalized lakes and ponds in Morocco’s southeast desert as a gift from God.
The once-dry golden dunes of Merzouga, a charming tourist hamlet around 600 kilometers (370 miles) southeast of Rabat, are now interspersed with refilled lakes and ponds.
“The recent rains have made us very happy,” Youssef Ait Chiga, a local tour guide, told a group of German tourists visiting Yasmina Lake, which is tucked away in the dunes of Merzouga.
Another tour guide, Khalid Skandouli, claimed that the rain has increased the number of tourists in the area, who are now especially keen to see this strange change.
Alongside him, French traveler Laetitia Chevallier, who frequently visits the area.
