Mr. Trump is a third-time candidate after losing the last election in 2020 to Joe Biden. He served as US president from January 2017 to January 2021.
In a poll conducted by News, he is currently five percentage points behind Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee this year. Across the country, Ms. Harris leads by an average of about 3.6 points.
When asked if he would run again in the event of a loss on the US television program Full Measure, Mr. Trump responded, “No, I don’t… That, in my opinion, is what will happen.”
In 2028, the previous president would be 82 years old, one year older than current President Biden.
The response was noteworthy because it appeared that Mr. Trump was ruling out a fourth run for the presidency and because he doesn’t often acknowledge that he could lose an election.
Typically, Mr. Trump maintains that the only way it could occur is if there was widespread cheating—a baseless accusation he made in 2020 and reiterated in anticipation of his 2024 presidential campaign.
After a catastrophic debate performance and months of criticism from Mr. Trump and other conservatives for being too old and unpredictable for the position, Mr. Biden withdrew from the race in July.
