At New Chitose Airport on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Tuesday, a Korean Air aircraft carrying 289 passengers and crew members clipped a Cathay Pacific aircraft, according to a Korean Air official.
According to an airline official, the contact occurred at approximately 5.30 p.m. local time, as the Korean Air aircraft was getting ready to take off.
The Kyodo News agency reports that the Cathay Pacific aircraft was empty when it crashed because it was stationary.
According to a local fire department spokesperson, there was no fire and no fuel leak found, but Japanese broadcaster NTV reported that no injuries were reported.
According to a Korean Air official, the incident occurred when snow on the ground caused a towing car, which was pushing the Korean Air plane backwards before departure, to slip.
As a result, the left wing of the aircraft clipped the right tail wing of the Cathay Pacific aircraft.
Cathay Pacific and the airport did not immediately provide a representative.
