ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari warned the government and the house that some of its unilateral actions are putting the federation under “severe strain” as he addressed the joint session of parliament to formally begin the second parliamentary year.
In spite of Sindh’s resistance, the president emphasized the recently proposed Cholistan Canal System, which was accepted by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) last month.
Zardari said that after being chosen by the Senate, the National Assembly, and all four provincial assemblies, it was his constitutional obligation to serve as the president of Pakistan.
Despite fierce opposition from federating units, he condemned the government’s unilateral move to cut further canals out of the Indus River System.
