Former Labour MP for Leicester South Jonathan Ashworth said he was “still around” and “not going anywhere” on Beth Rigby’s Electoral Dysfunction podcast after losing to an independent.
Soon after losing the election, Mr. Ashworth—who was expected to hold a cabinet position in the government—was named head of Labour Together, a powerful think tank.
When Rigby questioned Mr. Ashworth about his potential return to Westminster in the event of a by-election, for instance, he replied, “I’m still around.” I will continue to take part. I have no plans to leave.”
“I could see a by-election where Jon Ashworth is back,” said Rigby, “but I’m going to put a wager on here with myself, obviously betting on political events – ill-advised, if you’re in our business.” Simply stating the obvious.”
“Well, all I would say is people got into a lot of trouble betting on politics in recent weeks,” Mr. Ashworth retorted. Thus, exercise caution.”
