ISLAMABAD: Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the Supreme Court has expressed worries about the ramifications of removing cases from the benches, arguing that doing so will compromise judicial independence.
He questioned if committees can drop cases if it seems that a ruling might go against the government, citing previous events.
These statements were delivered on Tuesday during a contempt of court hearing presided over by Justice Shah and a two-member bench.
The lawsuit started when, in spite of a court order, the Supreme Court Registrar neglected to set up a hearing on a matter pertaining to bench powers.
The judges asked the registrar why the case was not scheduled as instructed at the beginning of the hearing. According to the registrar, the case was originally intended for a constitutional bench.
