According to reports, the federal administration intends to establish a constitutional court and amend Article 63-A of the Constitution, often known as the defection clause, as uncertainty surrounding the much-discussed “constitutional package” grows.
The prospects of the aforementioned constitutional package are being discussed in the context of rumors that Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October of this year, will have his term extended. This is because last month, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) requested that notification regarding the next top judge be issued ahead of schedule.
Although the administration has not disclosed any information regarding the proposed constitutional revisions, it has made it clear that the package will not be person-specific and will grant the authorities access to the legal system.
