ISLAMABAD: On Monday, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah voiced worries about the potential predicament the court may encounter in light of the recently enacted 26th Constitutional Amendment, which was passed by the Parliament.
The controversial constitutional package was passed by the Senate and National Assembly, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s coalition government, hours before Justice Mansoor’s remarks. The proceedings started on Sunday night and concluded in the early hours of Monday morning.
One of the proposed constitutional modifications in the package focused on the judiciary was to establish a fixed three-year term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
The commission will decide how many judges are needed for the constitutional benches that will be established in the Supreme Court and higher courts, in accordance with the modifications.
