KARACHI: The nation’s financial center’s citizens awoke to worsening air quality on Tuesday, making Karachi the world’s most polluted city this morning.
With an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 237, the city was deemed “very unhealthy” by Swiss air quality monitor IQAir.
The concentration of harmful PM2.5 pollutants, which are tiny particles that can enter the bloodstream by inhalation, was found to be 162 µg/m³. This is 32.4 times higher than what is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Since smog and air pollution problems are prevalent in the winter, when lower temperatures trap dust particles closer to the ground, the city’s chilly weather may be the cause of the deteriorating air quality.
