Former political consultant Derek Draper passed away at the start of January following years of severe health issues brought on by the coronavirus.
After making an emotional appearance on Monday’s episode to talk about how her children are coping with their father’s death, the TV presenter is back hosting the ITV breakfast show.
Former political consultant Derek Draper passed away at the start of January following years of severe health issues brought on by the coronavirus.
The 56-year-old, who was hospitalized for 13 months after catching the virus in March 2020, was reportedly among the COVID-19 patients in the UK with the longest illness duration. He was left with severe organ damage and required care on a regular basis.
On Thursday, the 56-year-old Garraway stated that returning to the desk on Good Morning Britain was both nice and “odd”.
At the start of the show, she said, “Just by saying hello, the make-up girls had me in tears this morning.”
“As well, thank you to everyone at home. Although I did mention that on Monday, you have been amazing.”
Co-presenter Ben Shephard made a joke about giving Garraway some “leeway” before congratulating her on the “extraordinary funeral” and saying it made her husband proud.
“You really did Derek proud, it was an extraordinary thing,” he stated.
Garraway stated, “I definitely wanted to make it about Derek not about me,” after acknowledging that she was feeling “wobbly”.
“It was really lovely as well to feel so much love from everybody here.”
Attendees at Draper’s funeral last Friday included Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, artist Sir Elton John, and former prime minister Sir Tony Blair.
