According to people familiar with the situation, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is thinking of passing laws that would limit police authority, Geo News said on Monday.
The sources also claim that the KP administration is considering allowing the assembly members’ wishes to be considered while making changes in the police and bureaucracy.
The sources went on to say that the police and provincial assembly members will meet once a month to discuss various matters, such as how to use development funds, and that the decision to appoint police officers and staff will be made after consulting with lawmakers.
According to the sources, the assembly would change the Police Act after receiving consent from the provincial cabinet.
They also stated that the inspector general of police’s transfer powers will be limited as a result of the act’s modifications.
IGP Akhtar Hayat, meantime, has denied rumors that he has limited authority.
