As the number of fatalities from a weeklong wave of violence climbed to 89, a local government official reported that gunfights between rival communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Kurram district continued on Wednesday.
Kurram district’s communities have been at odds for many years.
The most recent violence started last Thursday when at least forty-three people were killed in an ambush that targeted two different convoys that were being escorted by police.
A seven-day truce mediated by provincial officials this past weekend did not hold.
A Kurram district local government official, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP that there are still sporadic reports of gunshots coming from different locations.
Two more people have died in recent violence, adding to the total of 89 deaths over the last seven days, he said.
