According to News, one of the main ideas under consideration is to reduce the automatic release point for prisoners from the 50% point in their sentence to 40% or 43%.
Currently, convicts receiving conventional determinate sentences—that is, sentences with predetermined completion dates—are released halfway through their terms.
After being released, they complete their sentence under license, which entails community supervision by the probation department and adherence to predetermined guidelines.
Thousands more prisoners may be released early if the automatic release point is lowered.
Offenders with sexual, violent, or terror-related offenses are not eligible for this proposal.
It coincides with Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s first full week in office, during which she met with officials from the jail system today.
News has learned that Ms. Mahmood was eager to highlight her experience in the field, her training as a barrister, and the prime minister’s previous position as director of public prosecutions.
She stated that in order to increase the service’s efficiency going forward, she wanted to embrace technology and AI more.
