Lahore, the capital of Punjab, choked on deadly haze and once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities on Saturday as the megacity’s air quality continued to decline.
Despite the province government’s valiant efforts to combat smog, the air quality index (AQI) in Lahore skyrocketed to 1,067 at roughly 9:30 am on a real-time worldwide pollution chart provided by a Swiss air quality watchdog.
Jahangir Anwar, a top environmental protection official in Lahore, described it as “record high,” adding, “We have never reached a level of 1,000.”
“The air quality index will remain high for the next three to four days,” he stated.
Every winter, the city fights smog, a mixture of fog and toxins brought on by low-quality diesel fumes.
