After Lahore consistently topped the world pollution statistics, Punjab’s smog problem worsened as the poisonous air moved to neighboring towns in the province.
On IQAir’s real-time list of the most polluted cities, the provincial capital’s air quality index (AQI) hit 860 today (Friday). By 1pm, it had dropped to 569, but it was still well within the dangerous range.
At one time this morning, Multan had the worst air quality, with an AQI of 1,635—a level that is highly harmful to human health.
Anything over 300 on the AQI is deemed “hazardous” by the Swiss air quality monitor.
Due to poor vision caused by the dense smog that covered the southern metropolis, the M3 Motorway was closed near the Rajana Interchange.
