The government of Lahore imposed a “Green Lockdown” in certain locations on Wednesday in an effort to stop the concerning increase in air pollution.
The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is still higher than 500 despite previous efforts, therefore authorities are enforcing limitations to reduce the environmental effect and health hazards.
Some of the city’s most polluted areas are targeted by the shutdown, including Davis Road, Egerton Road, Kashmir Road, Queen Mary Road (Durand Road to Allama Iqbal Road), Empress Road (Shimla Hill to Railway Headquarters), and Abbot Road (Shimla Hill to Gulistan Cinema). The lockdown was declared by Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, DG of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Punjab, who also identified these regions as pollution hotspots that require urgent attention.
Construction is prohibited under the restrictions, and Chingchi rickshaws are not allowed inside.
