RAWALPINDI: A police spokeswoman said on Thursday that up to 250 individuals had been taken into custody following a violent student demonstration in the Dhoke Gangal neighborhood of the city.
The students, rallying against the alleged rape of a college-going girl in Lahore, destroyed a hostel after forcefully entering the hostel premises, flung stones and damaged the vehicles there.
Teachers and staff who had been initially trapped in the premises were evacuated while the police deployed tear gas to scatter the students.
The ongoing turmoil in the province over rape allegations that went viral on social media platforms is what prompted students to stage several demonstrations in different cities in recent days, which is why there are demonstrations today.
During violent riots in Lahore on, around twenty-six individuals were injured, including four police officers.
