LAHORE: Due to the ongoing dangerously high levels of smog in the provincial capital, the Punjab administration declared on Sunday that it will close the city’s elementary schools for the upcoming week.
According to a notice in this respect, schools up to the fifth grade would not be open from November 4 to November 9 due to the haze in Lahore. Both private and public educational institutions are subject to the directive.
For more than a week, the megacity has been at the top of the global air quality index (AQI) chart, posing a threat to the health of its citizens.
Smog, a mixture of fog and pollutants brought on by low-grade diesel emissions, smoke from seasonal agricultural burning, and winter weather have been plaguing the 14 million-person city for days.
