The Zocalo Square in Mexico local saw an estimated 90,000 attendees, according to the local government. According to the rally organizers, the number was significantly greater.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is accused by the opposition of attempting to undermine the National Electoral Institute, an independent organization.
He claims that the INE is crooked and biased.
Following his election as president in 2018, Mr. López Obrador has been advocating for INE reform, claiming that by significantly cutting the agency’s workforce, taxpayers will save $150 million (£119 million) annually.
The protest that took place on Sunday in Mexico’s historic square is the most recent to occur there in recent memory.
Protester Diana Arnaiz was cited by the AFP news agency as stating, “We want our president to keep his hands off the election, we want to defend our democracy, we want the INE… to be independent, and we do not want our autonomous institutions to be attacked.”
“We are millions of Mexicans who are against this government and I am coming out for my children and grandchildren,” declared Maria de Jesus Torres, who was present at the demonstration.
Because Mexican presidents are only allowed to serve one six-year term, Mr. López Obrador is not eligible to run for office again.
He is rooting for Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, who is now topping the polls.
