According to the company, nearly 1,000 artists were featured frequently enough to earn £100,000 in royalties each.
As part of Spotify’s “Loud and Clear” initiative, which strives to provide openness on how it compensates the music business, the data were made public.
The amount that really gets to musicians out of those royalties, however, is unknown to the firm.
This is so because each artist has a unique contract with their publishers and record company that specifies how the money is split.
A committee of MPs heard in 2021 that the artist’s portion is typically approximately 16%.
In other words, a musician whose work brought in £100,000 on Spotify might only get £16,000 in it.
