Over the next three days, Ukraine’s President Zelensky, US Vice President JD Vance, and as many as 60 other world leaders and decision-makers are expected to gather in Munich for the annual Munich Security Conference (MSC).
I’ve been going to and reporting on this event for the BBC for almost 20 years, and I can’t recall a year when there was so much at stake in terms of world security. The statement “this is the most dangerous and contested time I have ever known in my career” was made this week by a senior and highly experienced Western officer.
Why?
In short, the International Rules-based arrangement, the catchy moniker for the current global security arrangement, is in danger of disintegrating. Some claim that this is already taking place.
