The State Department clarified on Tuesday that Pakistani courts would decide whether to take legal action against the former prime minister in response to American lawmakers and former US envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad’s demand for the release of Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
“We do not comment on Congressional correspondence… legal proceedings against the former prime minister are matters for the Pakistani courts to decide,” a U.S. State Department official told Geo News via email exchange.
Due to his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case and subsequent sentence in other instances before the February 8 elections, which he disputes, the PTI founder has been in prison since August of last year.
