LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz fired back on Friday, saying the judges of the highest court need to let the nation advance rather than overturning the ruling that permitted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to seek reserved seats in the legislature.
Maryam remarked during a Lahore event, “I would like to ask the SC judges to let the country function.”
She said that judges on the Supreme Court had rewritten the Constitution in order to reinstate one individual in the political mainstream. “Who are those people who want to rewrite the Constitution and stop the country from moving forward?” she asked.
The Supreme Court decided on July 12 that the PTI was entitled to the distribution of reserved seats, marking a significant legal win for the party. The result has not only made it possible for the PTI, which was disqualified from the elections on February 8 due to the ECP’s finding in December 2023, to rejoin parliament, but it has also put more pressure on the coalition alliance because the judgment would alter the makeup of the National Assembly.
The chief minister of Punjab said that the PTI received relief from the Supreme Court that it had not even asked for.
Despite having already filed papers pledging allegiance to another party, the SC judges granted them a 15-day deadline to submit their affidavits asserting their membership with the PTI, she claimed.
We’re not going to make this easy for you. This government’s five-year term will come to an end.
