The 31-year-old pop artist passed away last Wednesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel.
According to the official, there was evidence of cocaine exposure in a preliminary toxicology study that was given to local prosecutors.
They emphasized that the preliminary findings do not provide a precise indication of the amount of the medication present in his blood at the time of his death.
It will likely take many weeks before the final toxicological results are released to the public.
Investigators from Argentina discovered what looked to be drugs and alcohol scattered throughout Payne’s home, including destroyed items and furniture.
Payne may have been in “semi or total unconsciousness” when he fell from his hotel balcony, according to the prosecution. According to officials, Payne was involved in “extremely serious injuries” after landing in the CasaSur Hotel’s patio.
The hotel desk manager informed a 911 operator that there was “a guest drunk with drugs and alcohol” who was “breaking everything in the room” just minutes before he passed away.
