Significant parts of a sizable solar farm were devastated by hailstorms in southeast Texas, underscoring the dangers of switching from stable “green” electricity sources to more erratic ones and raising concerns about possible chemical leaks from the defective panels.
Significant damage to the Fighting Jays Solar farm in Fort Bend County, Texas, was seen on aerial imagery. A neighboring resident questioned whether the solar panels were leaking substances like cadmium telluride, which is connected to significant health hazards in people, after the storm on March 15 broke hundreds of panels.
“We now have some highly toxic chemicals that could be potentially leaking into our water tables,” Needville resident Nick Kaminski told the news. “My concern is the hail damage that came through and busted these panels.” My family consists of my wife and two kids. Many of the locals who use well water, including my neighbors with children, are worried that the toxins are now seeping into our water tables.
