In less than a minute, the 17-year-old chased Holly around the town center of Hexham before stabbing and slashing her 19 times.
Holly was accompanied by a boy who was stabbed while attempting to assist her.
Due to his advanced age, MacPhail was unable to be identified after being found guilty of murder and intentional injuring in August.
MacPhail, who turns 18 on December 9, has been granted permission to be named, according to a judge.
Additionally, he allegedly had a relationship with Holly, but she didn’t want it to last.
During the trial, the prosecution stated that he was “jealous” that she was seeing a new boy.
On January 27, 2023, the day Holly was murdered, Holly’s mother was so worried that she called the police and made plans for her daughter to stay at school in case MacPhail was nearby.
According to testimony during the trial, Holly also told a friend that he was “basically stalking her”.
Before approaching Holly, MacPhail followed her about the town center for around forty-five minutes while she went shopping with friends.
