After completing a lengthy jail sentence in the United States, the founder of the infamous Los Zetas drug gang was repatriated to Mexico.
Before being surrounded by Mexican troops close to his hometown of Matamoros in 2003, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, at 57, was the leader of Los Zetas.
He oversaw the group’s transformation into one of the most formidable and vicious hit squads in the Mexican drug wars.
At the Otay border crossing, Cárdenas was turned over by US immigration officials to Mexican police. He was promptly detained again and transported to Mexico state’s El Altiplano maximum security jail.
He was arrested, according to Mexican authorities, on murder and organized crime allegations that stemmed from his days as one of Mexico’s most influential drug lords.
