In baseball circles, Tiant was affectionately referred to as “El Tiante,” and he passed away on Tuesday, a team source told the Boston Globe. Also, Major League Baseball announced Tiant’s passing.
The league expressed its profound sadness on X after learning of Luis Tiant’s demise. “In a Major League career that spanned 19 seasons, ‘El Tiante’ made three All-Star teams and won 20 or more games four times. In the American League, Tiant won two ERA championships: one for Cleveland in 1968 and another for Boston in 1972. The native of Cuba has pitched for the Yankees, Twins, Angels, Pirates, and Pirates. He was eighty-three.”
Former Red Sox outfielder Fred Lynn and others paid tribute to Tiant on social media.
RIP,”Today is a very sad day, Lynn wrote on X along with a picture of himself and Tiant. “My friend and teammate, Luis Tiant, passed away. A Big game pitcher, a funny genuine guy who loved his family and baseball. I miss him already…. RIP my friend.
