The minister for religious affairs requested extra time to give the seminary registration law a legal shape; thus, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), set a deadline of December 8 for the government to ratify the measure.
President Asif Ali Zardari sent the Madrassa Registration Bill back to the Prime Minister’s Office earlier this week, citing legal objections, further escalating tensions between the Maulana and the coalition government in the center.
Speaking at a gathering at the Madrassa Jamia Usmania in Nowshera, KP, the JUI-F chief stated that they did not want to clash with the state and preferred to stay inside their boundaries.
“Knowledge is knowledge,” he remarked, expressing his frustration at the distinction between ancient and modern schooling.
According to him, every religious seminary was retained.
