Felicia Montealegre, an actress who postponed her career to assist her husband, is played by Mulligan.
Cooper (who also co-wrote the film) focused on the couple’s love story rather than crafting a conventional biography about a creative genius. Cooper stars as Bernstein.
Mulligan said she was “the lead in the film” because of the script, according to the BBC.
The British actress said that she has “resisted playing the wife to the great man” in earlier movies to BBC culture and media editor Katie Razzall.
“I’ve been in some amazing… overtly feminist movies, like Promising Young, which I’ve loved and enjoyed being in so much.”
“However, what struck me as particularly remarkable was how expertly the character was written—a completely realized, intricate, and subtle writing style for a female. And that made her the movie’s lead and is such a feminist statement in and of itself.
“I believe that speaks more about advancement than anything else. This massive movie truly revolves around a woman and her spouse, but she receives this kind of attention.”
Although Mulligan has a significant amount of screen time and a crucial role, most would say that the British actress is really better characterized as Cooper’s co-lead.
However, even while the story logically explores the complexity and motivations of one of the most well-known composers and conductors in America, Cooper has unquestionably elevated Bernstein’s central character of the film is a lesser-known wife.
