The company he founded, news Studio, released a statement on Friday stating that he passed away on March 1st from an abrupt subdural hemorrhage, a form of bleeding close to the brain.
“We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come,” it continued.
The statement added that he was busy on other projects when he passed away and that only his family and very few friends attended his funeral.
After making its debut in the Weekly Shonen Jump comic in 1984, Dragon Ball was eventually made into films, video games, and television shows that were shown in more than 80 nations.
The studio claims that 260 million copies have been sold globally.
