According to best-selling novelist Marian Keyes, if she hadn’t become sober thirty years ago, she never would have become a writer.
The Irish author of the critically acclaimed novels This Charming Man and The Break stated to a Hay Festival audience, “I wouldn’t have had the discipline or self-belief.”
“I came to the writing business blessed (with material),” she jokingly said.I used to be an addict, I have really frizzy hair, and I suffer from depression.”
“I went to rehab and learned a ton about myself,” she continued. I learned so much from it about getting by in a cruel world.”
At the literary event, Keyes, whose hundreds of followers strain to hear her above the din of a very strong rainstorm, stated that rehab also allowed her to do it.
