Following allegations that he paid for medical bills and paid off “bad people” who had allegedly trapped him in a flat and demanded thousands of pounds for his release, Mark Menzies made the announcement.
Although the Lancashire backbencher MP for Fylde refuted the accusations, he was suspended from the Conservative parliamentary group pending the outcome of an inquiry.
“It has been an enormous privilege representing the people of Fylde since 2010, but due to the pressures on myself and my elderly mother, I have decided to resign from the Conservative Party,” Mr. Menzies said in a statement on Sunday.
I ask that the privacy of my family be respected as I have had a very trying week.
Following Labour’s request for an investigation, Lancashire Police stated that it was examining “information” regarding Mr. Menzies.
