In a ceremony held on Tuesday at the Iranian parliament, Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as the country’s new president.
Pezeshkian, the ninth president of Iran in history, took the oath of office during a ceremony held today in the main hall of the Iranian parliament in Tehran, starting at 16:00 local time.
The state TV said that around 70 foreign delegates, including high-ranking officials and secretary generals of regional and global organizations, were present at Iran’s President Pezeshkian’s swearing-in event.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, formally supported Masoud Pezeshkian, the winner of the July 5 runoff, as Iran’s new president on Sunday.
According to official results released by the Interior Ministry, he defeated former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili on July 5 in the second round of the presidential election, receiving 53.7% of the vote to Jalili’s 44.3%.
Not long after President Ebrahim Raeisi’s death in a fatal helicopter crash in May, a snap election was announced.
The president will have 15 days to submit his list of nominated ministers to the parliament for a vote of confidence, according to Mojtaba Yousefi, a member of the presiding board of parliament.
Yousefi further stated that on July 31, Pezeshkian will formally surrender his legislative mandate in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
