In Lahore and other major Punjabi cities, the cost of chicken meat has increased dramatically, almost reaching an unprecedented Rs485 a kilogram.
A month and a half after Eid, when demand is generally higher for other meats, the price increase coincides with this surge in demand.
Local vendors have given data indicating that the cost of a kilogram of broiler chicken meat has increased to Rs 483. The cost of a kilogram of broiler chicken meat has increased by Rs99 in the past three days alone.
A number of variables, including supply chain interruptions and the seasonal surge in demand, are to blame for the price increase. Dealers have observed that after Eid, when people return to their customary eating habits, there is typically a spike in demand for chicken flesh.
In the meantime, the retail price of live broiler chicken has been established at Rs333 per kilogram, while the wholesale price has been set at Rs321. Egg costs have not changed despite the rise in chicken prices; a dozen eggs currently cost Rs 250.
