The new prime minister of Mauritius stated that he has requested an impartial assessment of an agreement with the United Kingdom about the future of the Chagos Islands.
In the agreement, which is still pending, the UK would retain a 99-year lease over Diego Garcia, the location of a significant UK-US military airbase, but give up sovereignty over the archipelago.
According to a spokesman for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Navin Ramgoolam “indicated he was open” to the historic agreement on Thursday.
Ramgoolam, who was elected prime minister of Mauritius two weeks ago, informed the parliament that he had requested a review and that the government will take the results into consideration.
Following years of negotiations, when the agreement was finalized, Starmer and his then-Mauritian
