According to a panel of climate scientists on Wednesday, the oppressive heat that sweltered the Mediterranean region in July would have been “virtually impossible” in a world without global warming.
Such harsh summer spells are becoming more common in southern Europe and North Africa, where a catastrophic heatwave drove temperatures far beyond 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
Heatwaves caused wildfires in Greece and the Balkans, claimed more than 20 lives in a single day in Morocco, and caused stress in athletes competing in the Summer Olympics across France.
