Marko Elez, a 25-year-old former employee of Musk’s SpaceX company, was linked by the media to a now-deleted social media account that advocated racism and eugenics.
Elez’s resignation was announced by the White House on Friday, but it did not provide an explanation.
By asking followers if he should reinstate the Doge employee who made “inappropriate statements via a now deleted pseudonym” in a poll on his social media site, X, Musk himself confirmed the departure.
According to one message from the pseudonymous account in July, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,”
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the account linked to Mr. Elez, which made a number of inflammatory remarks that the news confirmed were real.
