NEW DELHI: The US behemoth, which had warned that its advertising revenue would be impacted, was greatly relieved when an Indian panel temporarily stayed a five-year data sharing restriction between WhatsApp and its owner, Meta Platforms.
The Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) November decision prohibiting WhatsApp and other Meta businesses from sharing data for advertising purposes was contested by Meta, which warned that it could have to remove some functionalities.
The CCI was also criticized by Meta for lacking the “technical expertise” necessary to comprehend the implications of its order.
While it considers Meta’s appeal of the antitrust decision, India’s National Company Law Appellate Tribunal decided on Thursday that the data sharing prohibition be suspended.
