During his tenure as John Major’s minister of state for Northern Ireland, he played a key role in facilitating the peace process that ultimately resulted in Tony Blair signing the Good Friday Agreement.
Confronted with controversy at the time, he was the first UK government representative to engage in negotiations with the IRA and was one of Mr. Major’s most trusted supporters.
According to the Conservative Party, which made the announcement of his passing, Lord Lothian died quietly in hospital during the early hours of Tuesday, accompanied by his immediate family, following a brief illness.
Lord Lothian was a prominent member of the Conservative Party and a well-respected figure in British politics. His death signifies the end of a noteworthy career that spanned more than 50 years, the party stated.
In a statement, his family stated: “Lord Lothian was well-known for his intellectual curiosity and his love of the arts, especially folk and country music, in addition to his political accomplishments.
