GENEVA: The UN migration agency said Friday that last year was the bloodiest on record for migrants, with almost 9,000 people dying on dangerous routes and one in ten of them being violently killed in shootings and other incidents.
At least 8,938 persons lost their lives while traveling by migration in 2024; the most fatal routes were in Asia, followed by the Mediterranean crossing and Africa, which includes the Sahara Desert.
Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stated in a statement, “The rise in deaths across so many regions in the world shows why we need an international, holistic response that can prevent further tragic loss of life.”
