The Member of Parliament states that “there comes a point when the threats to your personal safety become too much” and discloses that he, along with his staff, has begun to attend public events in his constituency wearing stab vests.
Ali Harbi Ali, the guy who fatally stabbed Southend West MP Sir David Amess in 2021, has been threatening Mike Freer, the Conservative MP representing Finchley and Golders Green in north London.
The fire attack on his constituency office in December, according to the minister of justice, was the “final straw”.
The Daily Mail quoted him as saying: “There comes a point when the threats to your personal safety become too much.”
After learning that Ali had observed his Finchley office before to killing Sir David at a constituency surgery, he and his staff, he claimed, had begun donning stab vests at scheduled public engagements in his constituency.
“I was extremely fortunate that, on the day [of Ali’s attempted attack], I was supposed to be in Finchley, but I ended up changing my plans and arriving in Whitehall,” Mr. Freer stated.
“Who knows if I would have escaped an attack or been attacked otherwise. He claimed he was here in Finchley to harm me.”
He claimed that although MPs attempt to “make light” of threats, the possibility that he might have been assassinated still lingered in the back of his mind.
Along with these threats, Mr. Freer claimed to have found “mock Molotov cocktails on the office steps” and got calls from Muslims Against Crusades “about coming to stab me”.
